Focale Grotesk - Font

Design a custom typeface that could serve as the typographic backbone of the Foundation's website and communications — rooted in Matiz's visual vocabulary, functional across digital contexts, and strong enough to stand alongside his photographs without competing with them.

Rather than referencing photography as subject matter, the typeface draws from its formal structure: the sharp cuts, rectilinear rhythms, and high-contrast compositions that define Matiz's abstract work. Focale Grotesk was built as a geometric sans — tight, tensed, optically balanced — where every glyph carries the same discipline as a Matiz frame: nothing decorative, nothing arbitrary.

Each glyph was constructed from scratch during a residency at the Foundation in Mexico, working in close proximity to the archive. The typeface was then deployed across the redesigned fundacionleomatiz.org — headings, navigation, display text — replacing the previous generic stack. Visual assets were produced to demonstrate how Focale Grotesk performs alongside the photographer's most iconic images: abstract compositions where type and photography reinforce each other rather than coexist by default.

The Foundation now has a typographic identity built specifically for their archive and mission. Focale Grotesk bridges the gap between institutional legibility and the graphic authority of Matiz's work — giving the Foundation a voice that matches the visual weight of the photography it exists to protect.
